Roasting Process

Margie and roaster at Barbaric BeanUnlike 90% of the places you buy coffee from, we roast our cute little beans on-site in our nifty Ambex Roaster.  What does this mean to you our valued customer?  The fact that we do not buy coffee from another company—preroasted—but do the roasting ourselves ensures incredible freshness.  It can be compared to enjoying fresh, handmade pasta to pasta that has been languishing on a shelf somewhere.  In fact, we are so passionate about providing coffee that is ultra fresh, we will not sell coffee that is over 2-weeks old.  That would be an insult to you.

First, we buy our beans green from far-flung countries around the globe from various coffee import companies.  I then lug them to our shop in heavy burlap bags, weighing between 130-150lbs, one bag on each shoulder (not!).  When I am ready to roast, the beans are dropped into a preheated rotating drum. The beans must be heated, and kept moving so they don't burn or roast unevenly.  In this dynamic environment a radical metamorphosis occurs: the green coffee beans expand to nearly double their original size and change in color and density. As the beans absorb heat, the color shifts from green to yellow and then to a light brown; and the longer you roast the darker they become.
We are not a large, mass producing roasting company.  We consider ourselves “micro-roasters.”  What that means is, we carefully roast our different coffees in small batches and there is a reason for that.  The smaller the quantity, the higher the quality.  The truth is: one roast does not fit all coffees.  Each country’s coffee has a unique flavor profile and the roasting process plays a pivotal role in bringing out their distinctive and delicate essence.  We have two roasters: one that roasts very small batches (about 1-pound at a time); and our larger one that can roast up to 20 pounds.  Do you enjoy a bold, dark roasted coffee from Kenya?  No problemo!  Maybe you lean toward an exotic blend of Central and South American coffees.  Coming up!  We love personal orders.
So in each and every bag of Barbaric Bean coffee, you are assured of the highest quality beans, handcraft roasted to your particular taste, and superior freshness.  My friend, you simply cannot beat that.

Be careful, though, after spinning in a hot rotating drum for 15-minutes or so, when those beans emerge they’re like an angry barbarian horde, looking to pillage and plunder.  Your only recourse is that as soon as you get them home, place them in a jar with a sealer, and grind them up quickly.  We are not responsible for any damage they may do.
