Why would
a successful therapist and a pastor look to start a coffee roasting
business and espresso bar? The answer: Read to the end of the
story!!
In 2003, we traveled to Italy, the birthplace of
espresso, and visited the countryside of Tuscany and the cities
of Florence and Venice. No matter where we went, we were served
outstanding, world-class cappuccino. Upon our return to the
United States, we were disappointed in what was being served
in coffee establishments and pawned off as espresso and cappuccino.
Something was birthed in us in Italy to find truly genuine Italian
espresso—and if we didn’t find it, we’d make
it ourselves. The idea of starting a business was slowly beginning
to brew (get it?).
In 2004, Joe grew restless in his role as assistant pastor of
a local church, feeling that he spent too much time in front
of his computer, and not enough time with people, which is his
passion. A dramatic shift was taking place, transforming his
pastoral call from inside the church building and into the marketplace.
He wanted to create a place where people could gather to share
life, or “sweet fellowship.” What better than over
coffee or tea? Joe’s background as a pastor, crisis intervention
counselor and clinical social worker has given him a wealth
of experience with people. This experience has prepared him
and further ignites his passion to spend time with people in
the coffee bar, hoping to provide that place of refuge with
a fantastic cup of coffee and a listening ear.
The idea of starting a business crossed Joe’s mind dozens
of times throughout his life, but, being in ministry, he never
acted on it. Margie already had her own business as a therapist,
and thought Joe had lost his mind when this barbaric vision
began!! But her passion for coffee and people and her zany husband
compelled both of them to pray and fast for this bold “out
of the box” mission. Joe’s realization over the
years of the importance of great customer service fueled his
desire to start a business where he can truly serve others.
But our barbaric mindset isn’t confined to our coffee.
In truth, it applies to the whole of life. Life is an adventure,
and ought to be lived with a wild, bold flare. Too many people
drift aimlessly along day after day with a tame predictability
and no clear purpose. We say: “Flee mediocrity!”
We follow Jesus Christ who said, “I came that you might
have life and have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10) Jesus
lived a life of passion, meaning, and purpose because He loved
God His Father and loved and served people. He eventually backed
up His words by dying on a cross for the sins of humanity. When
a person comes into a relationship with the living Christ, life
can then be lived as a barbarian. So, we invite you to join
the hordes at Barbaric Bean Coffee Roasters and—Carpe
Beanum!
